Heiress to sell oceanside penthouse
 Address: Perdue Penthouse

Have you ever dreamed of owning a luxurious oceanfront residence that includes a wine cave and a stealth limo (optional)?

If so, get ready for sensory overload—this one has extras that will spike your anticipation into the red zone.

Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Perdue, this exquisite property has hosted dignitaries from all over the world. Mrs. Perdue comes from the Sheraton Hotel family, and this gracious and artistic heiress is selling the penthouse furnished—complete (optional) with antique pieces and themed guest rooms with Oriental and European decor. This property has been appraised.

What is the floorplan like?

Almost a million dollars was spent upgrading the design and adding features. The layout has four bedrooms and four baths. It now serves two purposes—as a romantic retreat, and an elegant space to host parties and guests. You have never seen anything quite like this.

Lined with ribbon walls of glass, the redesign has resulted in a free flowing space washed in soothing natural light. The space is 4,228 square feet (per owner), plus 700 square feet of sun deck on the roof that is available only to this penthouse for a small annual fee—well worth it because it is the perfect spot for private sunbathing. There is approximately 400 square feet of private lobby leading to the penthouse, and there are four balconies.

Swing open the double front doors, and you are treated to a dramatic, glass-capped, octagon-shaped foyer with Paradiso marble floors which were specially quarried for use in the penthouse. On either side are display cabinets for art glass and decorator objects. This architecturally appealing foyer has been used to welcome parties of up to two hundred guests.

The penthouse has been used for many charitable events, fundraisers and business entertaining. To accommodate these parties, the home has two kitchens—one, a restaurant-caliber catering kitchen—the other an inviting social space with island work station for spreading out hors-d’oeuvre trays and fine wines. It is decorated with heavy slab granite counters and glass-display cabinet fronts etched with a grapevine motif.

But dear reader, you may decide to buy the instant you see the view. It is something to behold. This penthouse sits on the twentieth floor of a building called the Pyramid. This is a world-class, National-Geographic-horizon-bending view—one big visual gulp of the azure blue Atlantic. You are so high up that when you gaze out to the horizon, you can actually detect the curvature of the earth! This is a view that will never be duplicated again. Why? A recently passed building code now limits new buildings to a height of only ten stories. The penthouse has earned the nickname the “Aerie” which means the nest of a large bird. The penthouse towers so far above the shoreline, it will remind you of being on a cruise ship—you look out across nothing but vast ocean (see top left photo). The owner says from this perspective you can also see migrating porpoises.

This high position yields another interesting experience—especially if you like watching the weather. When thunderstorms form offshore, you can watch them spark, snarl and tumble as they march up and down the coastline. The appraisal reflects the elegance of this property.

A “hidden” wine cave

Without question, the most talked about room is the wine cave. It is as if the “Imagineers” from Disney were brought in to create this experience. For starters, the entrance to the cave is cleverly disguised behind a cabinet door. Step inside for a one-of-a-kind experience. The most common reaction is “Ohmygod, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life!” The walls and ceilings look like stone. There is a fireplace...trickling waterfall...amethyst crystal formations and genuine fossils. There is seating for ten. Press a console button and a ghost speaks to guests. Sir James Nithsdale (the ghost) tells the story of how the wines that the guests are drinking came to be. As the ghost tells his story, fog rolls in, and the guests hear—and feel the thunder—due to the transponders embedded in the seats.

The wine-tasting cave is the hit of every party, but it serves other purposes, too. Fiber optics can change the cave ceiling to a night sky, and you can control the aromas with scents such as fresh pine and new earth. Sound effects are also in place—creaking doors and dragging chains for Halloween...birthday songs in ten languages...and for foreign guests—there are national anthems representing twelve countries. Or you can use it as a meditation room with quiet music playing in the background. Custom sounds and new stories can easily be programmed.

Live here, look forward to this...

Now, switch gears a bit, and think about how you can use this penthouse as an escape when you need your world to spin a little more slowly. Pretend you have had one of those bone-crushing, tension-filled, teeth-gnashing weeks at the office. There have been meetings, deadlines, phone calls and emails chasing you. Imagine what it would be like when you arrive at the penthouse late Friday afternoon just as the sun is starting to set. As you haul yourself out of the car, turn off that cell phone. Come upstairs and get out of those work clothes. Put on something comfortable. Fire up your favorite music CD. Open all of the windows. As you slide open all of the glass doors, you begin to feel ocean breezes as they roll in off the water. Order in some food. Light some candles. As the stars begin to fill the night sky, sit outside with a glass of wine and your sweetie. You are already starting to feel human again. Take a long hot soak in the whirlpool, then you can go to sleep to the aroma of a sea breeze while you listen to the rhythmic ebb and flow of the surf. Ahh, just thinking about it eases your breathing. On Saturday, you can get up whenever you feel like it, have fresh coffee and go for a walk or jog on the beach.

What is a JetVan “stealth” limo?

At an extra cost, the buyer has the option to include an exotic extra—a stealth limo, not a stretch limo like you are used to seeing. This is a custom-built, high-tech marvel that has been likened to a Gulf Stream Jet on wheels. Built by Becker Automotive, this luxurious van (cost $250k) intentionally looks inconspicuous on the outside. It is appointed inside with seating for seven, leather, reclining, heated seats that have fold out desks. It was used recently to transport the President of Poland from the UN building. On board features include wireless internet access, navigation systems, television, and wine refrigerator. Use it to bring in special guests, and they can stay on the “grid” during the drive time. Tiger Woods has one of these. So does King Abdulla II of Jordan.
